On Wednesday that quantity is "water an almond requires". On Thursday the same quantity is "waste water". It cannot be both. It is in fact neither: it is Fulton's total water footprint, of which 51.7% is irrigation, 42.8% is a modeled pollution-dilution volume that was never withdrawn from anything, and 5.5% is rain.
Hype signals observed
- Two harvests from one podcast. The same 2026-09-01 episode posted twice in 21 hours, the second time under "It's been revealed" with no source named. The second post outperformed the first on likes, 9,592 to 8,151.
- Passive attribution. "It's been revealed" in the companion post, where the first post had at least said who. The agent disappears exactly as the claim gets bigger.
- The verb borrowed from the other number. Water "could power someone making 100 ChatGPT queries/day". Water powers nothing. Altman's blog gives 0.34 watt-hours and 0.000085 gallons in adjacent sentences, and the post has taken the verb from one and the figure from the other.
- Precision as authority. "38,000" and ">385 years" read as measurements. Both are back-solved products of a self-reported figure with no published methodology and a modeled agricultural footprint, multiplied together.
- Zero citation surface. 44 words across two posts, no link, no image, no study, no episode name. Altman is named once; the almond number is sourced nowhere at all.
- Scale flattery. "16oz bag" and "385 years" are chosen to make the comparison feel domestic and enormous at once. A per-almond figure and a per-bag figure are the same claim; the second is simply multiplied by 368.
Not observed, and worth stating: no prompt injection, no hidden text, no fabricated institutions, no fabricated numbers, no fake study. Every figure in both posts traces to a real, findable, checkable source. The failure here is entirely in the accounting boundary, and about half of it was inherited from Altman rather than invented by Polymarket.
Disclosure
This report was produced by Claude, a model made by Anthropic, and its subject is a statement by the CEO of OpenAI, a direct competitor. That is a conflict that cannot be removed, so it is stated instead. Two things follow. Every source above is named and linked so a reader can redo any verdict without trusting the auditor. And the verdicts that run in Altman's favour are the ones to check hardest: claim 1 is rated confirmed, claim 5 is rated confirmed, and claim 2 carries the strongest steelman available to it, namely that Google's published inference methodology puts a median Gemini text prompt at 0.26 mL of onsite water against Altman's 0.32 mL, which independently corroborates the per-query figure on a like-for-like basis. Rating this content harshly to look independent would be the same failure mirrored, and it would produce a worse report.
Incentive analysis
Polymarket is a prediction market that earns from trading volume and new accounts. Its X feed runs a high-cadence "JUST IN" wire that works as top of funnel: neither post links to a tradeable market, and neither needs to. The product is the habit of treating the account as a news source. What that incentive selects for is visible in the pair: the story was posted, it did 1.2 million views, and it was posted again the next day with the numbers rearranged into a bigger-sounding shape. The second version is the one that added the false element.
Altman's incentive is more direct and more consequential. OpenAI is in the middle of the largest datacenter buildout in the company's history, several of the sites are in water-stressed basins, and public opposition is organised around exactly this issue. A comparison that makes a ChatGPT query look like a rounding error against a snack food is worth a great deal to that programme, and it is being made with a number OpenAI has never published a methodology for. Note which direction the errors run: every accounting choice in the 38,000 figure, using total footprint rather than irrigation on the almond side, and onsite cooling only rather than full scope on the query side, pushes the ratio the same way.
The Almond Board of California is the third interested party, and it is cited here twice. Its factsheet is tier 4 on its own crop. It is used for two things it has no incentive to overstate: the definition of grey water, which it takes verbatim from the Hoekstra standard, and the fact that the blue water footprint is modeled on the maximum water applied rather than what growers actually use.
Bottom line
The attribution is clean and deserves saying first. Altman really did say this, on the debut episode of Alex Heath's Sources podcast published 2026-09-01, and the post went up 26 hours later. There is no invented quote, no recycled years-old story, no fake study. On the narrow question of whether a ChatGPT query uses very little water, he is probably right, and Google's published measurement of 0.26 mL per median Gemini prompt is real corroboration for his 0.32 mL.
The comparison is what fails, and it fails twice in the same direction. The almond side uses Fulton et al.'s total water footprint, 12 L per almond, of which only 51.7% is irrigation; 42.8% is grey water, a modeled volume of clean water that would hypothetically be needed to dilute nitrate runoff, which nobody ever pumps or spends, and 5.5% is rain that fell on the orchard regardless. Compare irrigation water only and the answer is 20,000 queries, not 38,000. The query side then uses onsite cooling water only, while the almond figure is a full cradle accounting. Correct both and the honest ratio is roughly 1,600 to 10,500 queries per almond. The stated figure is 3.6 to 24 times too high.
The companion post is where it stops being framing and becomes an error of fact. It takes that same total footprint, the whole 1,229 gallons per pound, and calls it "waste water". Grey water is the opposite of waste water: it is clean water notionally required, not dirty water produced. And even on the post's own terms the number is wrong, because the grey component alone gives 169 years, not 385.
There is a real argument buried under all of this, and neither Altman nor Polymarket makes it: per-query water use genuinely is small, and the thing that matters is aggregate draw concentrated in specific basins on municipal potable systems, which is a different question that a per-unit comparison to a crop cannot answer in either direction. As CalMatters found, no independent expert can verify Altman's number at all. Shaolei Ren of UC Riverside: "The information we have is so limited." Michael Kiparsky of UC Berkeley: "There's no published data - certainly not for California - and what is public seems all over the place." A figure nobody outside OpenAI can check, compared against a crop model that measures something else, is not a fact. It is a talking point with a decimal point.
What a hostile reader would hit first
- The two posts label the same number differently. One arithmetic step reaches it: 38,000 queries per almond and 385 years per 16 oz bag imply 370 almonds per bag, which is the same quantity twice. Wednesday it is the water an almond needs; Thursday it is waste water. The account contradicted itself in 21 hours and the receipts are both still up.
- "Waste water" is a category error, not a rounding error. Grey water is defined by the standard the almond industry itself uses as the clean water needed to dilute pollution, not water discarded. This is the fastest hit available and it needs no datacenter knowledge at all. Fixable only by deleting the post.
- 1.1 gallons is the number everyone knows, and it is not the number used. The widely reported almond figure, from Mekonnen and Hoekstra via Mother Jones in 2014, is 1.1 gallons, which yields 12,941 queries. Getting to 38,000 requires 3.2 gallons, and a reader who does that division will ask where the extra two gallons came from before anyone explains green and grey water to them.
- Altman said "the same amount", the post says "can require more". Small, checkable in one click of the Fortune transcription, and it lands because 38,000 is by construction the break-even point. The post nudged an equality into an inequality in the direction of its own headline.
- The per-query figure has no published methodology. OpenAI has never shown its work on 0.000085 gallons, while Google published a full technical paper for its comparable number. Slower to land than the others, but the most durable, because it reframes both posts as arithmetic performed on a figure supplied by the party the arithmetic flatters.
